WHAT IS FASTDRAW?
The sport of Fastdraw was born from the Hollywood myth of the Western Gunfight. During the 1950's and early 1960's the TV Western reigned over the airways. Shows such as Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Have Gun Will Travel, The Rifleman etc. were the top rated series and had huge audiences. Studios all promoted their stars as the fastest guns in the Hollywood. Hugh O'Brien, who portrayed Wyatt Earp, was the first to make this claim; he hired a coach and challenged other Hollywood stars. Soon the art of Fastdraw became a hobby to many celebrities, Clint Eastwood, Glenn Ford, James Drury, Sammy Davis Jr. Jerry Lewis, just to name a few.
Dee Woolem, a trick-shooting stuntman, is considered the "Father of Fastdraw". While working at Knott's Berry Farm in Southern California, as a "train robber" he developed the first Fastdraw timer. He held the first organized Fastdraw contest in 1954. From the small beginning Fastdraw Clubs began to spring up across North America. With National and World Championships being held in places like Tombstone, Arizona, Deadwood, South Dakota and here and now Bearspaw, Alberta.
